Taking place every third Monday in January, the Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of Service is the only federal holiday observed as a national day of service – a "day on, not a day off." By  transforming Dr. King’s life and teachings into community action, MLK Day of Service helps to meet national challenges by bringing together people, strengthening communities, and benefiting those who serve.

At HRC and one n ten, we believe that we have a responsibility to ensure the safety and well-being of our LGBT youth, who make up 40% of homeless and at-risk youth. In our first year participating in MLK Day of Service, we are pleased to announce a service project benefiting LGBT homeless youth in our Phoenix community. As an HRC supporter, you have seen first-hand how we can make an impact when we join together and take action.

There are TWO ways YOU can help: by donating items and volunteering your time.

On Monday, January 21st, HRC and one n ten are collecting the following items, which LGBT homeless youth critically need. Volunteers will also be needed to help with donation drop-offs and organization of these items.

• Unopened travel-sized toiletries including soaps, shampoos, toothbrushes, toothpaste, moisturizer, lip balm, deodorant, handwipes, tissues, disposable razors, feminine hygiene products, brushes and combs.
• Gift cards in denominations of $10 for national big box retailers. (for purchase of fitted items like bras)
• Basic necessities such as underwear, socks, t-shirts, etc. (All sizes needed. one n ten serves more boys than girls.)
• First-aid supplies such as band-aids, sanitizing wipes or gel, and cough drops.
• Backpacks

You can drop off your items for donation or volunteer at the following location:

About one n ten: one n ten is a not-for-profit organization dedicated to serving and assisting lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and questioning (LGBTQ) youth. We provide youth with tools to improve self-esteem and acceptance of who they are. We work with youth in the age range of 14 to 24, and are committed to working in collaboration with other valley and national organizations that help teens, including homeless shelters and suicide prevention crisis lines. We create a safe space, mentally and physically, for youth of all socio-economic and cultural backgrounds. Our weekly discussion groups cover a wide range of social, educational, health, and community issues. Youth with particular needs have the option to speak with peers or volunteers one-on-one, in a supervised setting. We offer resources for healthy living and making healthy choices, as well as social networking opportunities appropriate for developing leadership skills and having fun.
