San Francisco MLK Day of Service |
|
Taking place every third Monday in January, the Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of Service is the only federal holiday observed as a national day of service – a "day on, not a day off." By transforming Dr. King’s life and teachings into community action, MLK Day of Service helps to meet national challenges by bringing together people, strengthening communities, and benefiting those who serve. At HRC and Larkin Street Youth Services, we believe that we have a responsibility to ensure the safety and well-being of our LGBT youth, who make up 40 percent of homeless and at-risk youth. In our first year participating in MLK Day of Service, we are pleased to announce a service project benefiting LGBT homeless youth in our San Francisco community. As an HRC supporter, you have seen first-hand how we can make an impact when we join together and take action. There are TWO ways YOU can help: by donating items and volunteering your time. To Donate Items: HRC and Larkin Street Youth Services are collecting the following items in order to create care bags for LGBT homeless youth.
Please consider donating any quantity of these essential items and dropping them off at any of the following locations. Please drop them off in bags or boxes marked "MLK Day of Service." Larkin Street Youth Services HRC Action Center & Store For special drop-off arrangements, please contact Kelley McCoy at (702) 324-6999. To Volunteer: On Monday, January 21st, we will need volunteers to assemble care bags for LGBT homeless youth. Volunteer training and orientation, food, and beverages will be provided. Monday, January 21st, starting at 10:00 a.m. For more information about either donating or volunteering, please contact Kelley McCoy, HRC San Francisco/Bay Area Steering Committee Co-chair, at kelleymccoy@gmail.com.
