Los Angeles MLK Day of Service

NOTE: Volunteer slots are filled, but items are still needed. Please sign up to pledge to donate items or to serve as Donation Captains, or contact Carmen Salgado directly at

Taking place every third Monday in January, the Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of Service is the only federal holiday observed as a national day of service – a "day on, not a day off." By  transforming Dr. King’s life and teachings into community action, MLK Day of Service helps to meet national challenges by bringing together people, strengthening communities, and benefiting those who serve.

At HRC and the Children, Youth & Family Services of the L.A. Gay & Lesbian Center, we believe that we have a responsibility to ensure the safety and well-being of our LGBT youth, who make up 40 percent of homeless and at-risk youth. In our first year participating in MLK Day of Service, we are pleased to announce a service project benefiting LGBT homeless youth in our Los Angeles community. As an HRC supporter, you have seen first-hand how we can make an impact when we join together and take action.

How can YOU make a difference? There are TWO ways:
By donating items and volunteering your time.

On January 19 and 20, HRC and the Children, Youth & Family Services of the L.A. Gay & Lesbian Center are collecting the following items, which LGBT homeless youth critically need. Volunteers will also be needed to help with donation drop-offs and organization of these items. Please keep in mind that the Center's youth clients range from 12 years old to 25 years old, with the average age being 20 years old.

  • New underwear and socks (both dress socks and white tube socks)
  • Clean and unstained dress shirts for job interviews
  • Belts
  • Padfolios and messenger bags for job interviews
  • Professional wigs for transgender female clients going on job interviews
  • New and unused travel-sized toiletries such as shampoo, toothbrushes, shaving kits, soaps, and moisturizers
  • Gift cards for big box stores

You can drop off your items for donation or volunteer at the following location:

Saturday, January 19 and Sunday, January 20
12:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m.
Youth Center on Highland
1220 N. Highland Ave.
