Transfigurations: Transgressing Gender in the Bible

Date:
Wednesday, July 24, 2013
Time:
7:30 PM - 9:30 PM

A theatrical Performance by Peterson Toscano

Vanderbilt Divinity School
Room 122
411 21st Ave., South
Nashville, TN 37240

In a lively performance, Peterson Toscano explores the stories of gender-variant and gender non-conforming characters in the Bible. Hilarious, moving, and grounded in scholarship, Toscano’s “performance lecture” deepens well-known (and lesser-known) Bible stories as he presents an array of characters with an array of genders.

"Peterson Toscano's work combines astute readings of the Bible with great story-telling and comedy. He offers interpretations of the texts and insights that even experienced biblical scholars haven’t seen before. When portrayed by Toscano, Bible stories and characters come to life with wit, sympathy, and humor."
– Dale Martin, Ph.D, Woolsey Professor of Religious Studies, Yale University. Author of Sex and the Single Savior and Pedagogy of the Bible
