2013 Municipal Equality Index Launch in Atlanta
Atlanta City Hall
55 Trinity Avenue
Atlanta, GA 30303
On November 20, HRC President Chad Griffin will join Atlanta Mayor Kasim Reed, Georgia Equality's Executive Director Jeff Graham and Atlanta City councilmember Alex Wan for a press conference to celebrate Atlanta's notable score on the 2013 Municipal Equality Index and acknowledge the achievements in LGBT equality that are being made at the municipal level in Georgia and across the country.
The 2013 Municipal Equality Index (MEI) is the second edition of the only rating system of LGBT inclusion in municipal law. From coast to coast, America’s cities are demonstrating a commitment to treating lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) people with dignity and respect by passing laws and implementing policies that treat all people equally. Atlanta is a shining example of a city committed to LGBT inclusion, as Atlanta’s score on the 2013 Municipal Equality Index will demonstrate.
However, November 20 is also a solemn day for the LGBT community. Join HRC Atlanta on the steps of the State Capitol, 206 Washington Street Southwest, at 6pm for Transgender Day of Remembrance, a tribute to those who have lost their lives to anti-transgender hatred or prejudice and to raise awareness of the constant threat of brutality faced by the transgender community. Atlanta’s success on the 2013 MEI gives the city a reason to be proud, but every city must recognize, mourn, and continue to fight anti-transgender prejudice and violence.
