Massachusetts, California, Connecticut, Iowa. In the past year, tens of thousands of loving same-sex couples have entered into marriage in these states. And with new laws soon to take effect in New Hampshire, Maine and Vermont, thousands more will surely join them.
But the federal government still refuses to recognize a single one. Why? Because of the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA) enacted in 1996. This discriminatory and hurtful law prevents millions of Americans from fully joining the institution of marriage even if they are legally married.
In recent months, momentum to finally repeal DOMA has been surging. As poll after poll shows support for marriage equality growing, DOMA has become a relic of a bygone era.
Washington needs to know why DOMA must end. Will you take this quick survey to show Congress and President Obama how DOMA affects you and those you care about?
We’ll deliver your responses directly to your lawmakers and the Obama administration, so please be thorough. And please share this survey with everyone you know!
